Keali’i is a huge spirit – of mixed Hawaiian, Chinese, and European descent, he was born on the mainland but chose Kaua’i as his home 25 years ago. As a child he spent all his summers here, helping in his grandfather’s fishing operation. He is a natural born teacher who has retired from the school system so that he can fulfill the vision that has long been with him… to share the old way of doing things with the new guests of the island, touching, seeing and smelling what the people of old did, while they lived the love they felt for their home.
His experience – and experiences – span a staggering range, and he remembers absolutely everything. He tells a story like no other, captivating his audience, then, often choking them with laughter. He is honest, open and candid, strong, clear, and deeply in touch with his own mind…and the world around him. In a half a whisper of wind, he can feel the change in the weather… he sees the connectedness of the planet and all her smaller forms of life as one gigantic, fascinating system. He delights in the details and shares them with appreciative energy that will astound you. As a host and a guide, he is intelligent and intuitive, murmuring in your ear as you go, then somehow, getting completely out of the way at just the right moment. So you end up having your own relationship with the place after a short hike with Uncle K.
OK, I could go on forever here, because this man is so vast and varied…and still I would barely scratch the surface. Let me wrap by saying this: you know how sometimes, the person in the role and the role are so perfect for each other, the harmony is palpable? So it is in this case. Come play with Uncle K. You have to feel this yourself.
